XcelleNet, Inc.has announced Afaria Security Manager, a solution for securing handheld devices and the data on them. Security Manager eliminates the most significant risks associated with deploying and managing technology used outside corporate walls by strengthening user authentication, encrypting device data, and rendering the device useless if lost or stolen. Complementing this new product release, the company also announced the XcelleNet Security Framework, a strategic initiative to help businesses minimise security risks and better capitalise on the benefits of frontline technology across all platforms by ensuring the seamless integration of its own software products with those of selected partners.
As enterprises move more of their resources closer to their customers, it becomes necessary for workers in the field to access corporate information using frontline devices such as handhelds. These mobile devices are particularly vulnerable to theft, loss and attacks from hackers and malicious code. Security is a leading concern for businesses that want to improve performance by empowering their employees with applications and data they need to do their jobs anywhere and anytime. Afaria Security Manager provides businesses with central, policy-based management of password protection and data encryption features to alleviate these concerns.
"It is a fact that the amount of data that resides outside the corporate LAN is growing," said Yad Jaura, Worldwide product marketing, XcelleNet. "With a tremendous amount of sensitive business data residing in PIM data and e-mail alone, it's not surprising that we're already seeing security concerns and incidents reflected in published articles and surveys everyday. While they play an increasingly valuable role, mobile devices are not only physically difficult to monitor and maintain but also create every specific application and data management needs. Afaria Security Manager breaks down these security threats that keep many enterprises from reaping all benefits of mobile solutions."
In the current release of Security Manager, emphasis has been placed on the most critical security need keeping sensitive mobile data safe. Among the features provided are:
Enforced Power-on Passwords - The power-on passwords and other authentication methods provided by handheld devices can be continuously enforced so users do not disable them.
*Data-on-Device Encryption - Specified data on the device as well as on removable cards can be encrypted, ensuring the security of the data if the device is lost or stolen.
*Lock Down and Data Wipe - Should the device be lost or stolen, administrators have the ability to lock down the device by disabling all end user passwords, leaving access available only to the administrator. The administrator can clear the device completely by either deleting data or restoring the device to factory settings with a hard reset.
*Centralised Policy-Based Management - Security Manager centralises control of security policies, allowing IT administrators to configure and manage different security policies by user group profile. Like all Afaria administrative functions, this can be done from any browser with Afaria's web-based console.
