SmoothWall Ltd has announced the availability of version 3.1 of SmoothTunnel, its Virtual Private Network (VPN) Gateway. The new module includes support for Layer 2 Tunnelling Protocol (L2TP). Combined with SmoothWall’s L2TP Wizard for Microsoft Windows, it provides companies with a secure VPN for their mobile computing users - at less than half the cost of a typical SSL VPN system.

“Smaller companies are realising they face the same security implications as their larger counterparts. If they are going to meet the growing cultural change towards working from home and working off-site, then they are going to have to implement a VPN which is secure but does not cost the earth,” said George Lungley, managing director of SmoothWall Ltd. “Our L2TP VPN solution is a great low cost, simple, reliable and protocol independent VPN solution, suitable for all types of companies. It is easy to set up, install and manage like an SSL VPN solution, yet as it establishes a true network to network connection like IPSec, all standard internet protocols and applications work without the need for complex protocol and application specific software in the VPN gateway.”

As SmoothTunnel’s L2TP VPN operates at the network level, all standard Internet and IP protocols are supported, enabling remote users to access their office network without the VPN technology placing restrictions upon what can be used. Demanding protocols and applications like Flash, Java, FTP, streaming media and even Voice over IP applications like Microsoft NetMeeting all work over an L2TP VPN tunnel. When used in “Remote Gateway” mode all Internet traffic is routed through the VPN Gateway, ensuring users adhere to the same controls and policies as office based users, such as web content filtering, internet access control and anti-virus. As an added bonus, for an L2TP tunnel running in Remote Gateway mode, the user will be protected from any external hackers, because their PC will not respond to any traffic that isn’t routed via the VPN Gateway.

Highlights of SmoothWall’s L2TP solution include:
· Affordable: Lower cost than a SSL VPN or an IPSec Windows client solution;
· Simple configuration: The SmoothWall L2TP Wizard enables a typical laptop PC user to configure a VPN connection in just a couple of minutes;
· Secure: Due to the use of 3DES data encryption and x509 certificate authentication;
· Protocol/Application Independent: Works with all common IP protocols including Microsoft Windows networking, file and print sharing, web, FTP and email servers, VoIP, streaming video and audio. SSL VPN involves the use of complex proxies for each protocol supported, thus protocol/application support is vendor dependant;
· Versatile connection support: Works with any internet connection from an analogue dial-up modem (at 9600 Baud upwards), through to GSM and GPRS mobile phones, Wi‑Fi hot spots up to high-speed broadband and leased line connections;
· Standards Compliant: RFC 2661 and 3193, whereas SSL-VPN technology is proprietary, vendor specific and not inter-operable.
