Every week, new hacking exploits make the front page of Computer and IT magazines. When it's not a British IT contractor being accused of causing nearly £1,000,000 of damages by hacking into US military systems, it is reported that a hacking gang has stolen tens of thousands of pounds from travel companies by transferring fraudulent "refunds" on their credit cards.
This confirms how vital it is for any organisation both in the public and in the private sectors to ensure that their IT systems are properly secured against attacks. Failing to implement a secure IT strategy can be a very costly mistake: the average cost of an attack being estimated at $125,000.
Hackcess, the IT Security training company, warns that 'average' hackers can easily break into most IT systems. The Pentagon hacker was described by several sources as being only slightly more technically advanced than script kiddies, and the travel companies’ hackers covered their electronic tracks with tools widely available on the Internet.
Hackcess believes that the best way to defeat an attacker is to think and act like one. This is why it has developed a range of training courses (specifically designed by hackers), revealing how they circumvent and defeat security measures in networks, applications and operating systems - even within environments believed to be secure. Hackcess’s purpose is to allow IT professionals to get inside the hackers’ mind to gain practical experience of the various techniques that a hacker would use to attack and gain access to a corporate network, and thus secure their systems.
Hackcess's first course called ‘hacking techniques’ is a pre-requisite for most other courses as it covers all the essential hacking and IT security concepts. Its first module ('Attack') presents the anatomy of an attack, giving a complete overview of web and software vulnerabilities, followed by a review of various forms of attacks - from backdoors and Trojans, to DoS attacks and password-cracking. The second module ('Defence') deals with the various techniques and tools than can be used to protect and secure IT systems against such attacks.
Classes take place in the London area, but Hackcess also offers custom courses, which can take place at the client’s location, in a familiar environment. Courses are also available in printed format for distance learning.
